‘Amitabh Bachchan would party till 1-2 am, Jaya would search for him’: Sachin Pilgaonkar recalls shooting with megastar for Satte Pe Satta
Sachin Pilgaonkar recently opened up about his experience working with Amitabh Bachchan on the comedy film Satte Pe Satta. During an interview, Pilgaonkar offered unique glimpses into Bachchan’s personality, showcasing his respect, humility, and lesser-known fun-loving side.
“Our timing was great. We weren’t the best of friends, Bachchan sahab keeps distance. It is his nature, nothing against him. One should be like that too. So one cannot become friends with him,” Pilgaonkar revealed, highlighting Bachchan’s reserved nature in an interview with Radio Nasha.
However, Sachin Pilgaonkar also spoke about Amitabh Bachchan’s remarkable ability to show respect to everyone, regardless of age. “He respects elders for sure, but he also gives full respect to people younger than him too. If he is sitting for a shoot, and if I go to meet him, he will stand up, shake hands and greet people. This is his sanskaar.”
Pilgaonkar’s stories highlighted the fun-filled atmosphere on the sets of Satte Pe Satta. “We used to have a lot of fun. It felt like we were on a picnic. We were all such waahiyad log, only one sharif person on set was Amitabh Bachchan,” he said. Despite being the most disciplined person on set, Bachchan surprisingly became close friends with the cast.
Satte Pe Satta, a 1982 Bollywood comedy classic, is the story of seven brothers navigating love, family, and chaos. Directed by Raj N. Sippy, the film also features Hema Malini, Amjad Khan, and Ranjeeta Kaur. With catchy songs and a blend of humor and drama, Satte Pe Satta became a commercial success and remains one of Amitabh Bachchan’s most iconic films, showcasing his versatility as an actor.
During the film’s Kashmir schedule, Bachchan would often join his co-stars at the Broadway hotel, leaving his luxurious Oberoi Palace accommodation behind. “Jaya ji and their kids had accompanied him, were staying with him at his hotel. Every day, after pack up, Amit ji would sit in his car and come to Broadway to party with us.”
Pilgaonkar fondly recalled Bachchan’s late-night gatherings with the team and how Jaya would keep wondering where her husband was and why he hadn’t returned to the hotel long after pack-up. “He wouldn’t go to the Oberoi Palace. Jaya ji would be searching for him, there were no mobile phones at that time. Amit ji would tell us, ‘Call Jaya ji and tell her that I am here.’ He would sit around with us till 1-2 am, talking. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with us, it was new for him.”
Sachin Pilgaonkar is currently busy with the promotions of his latest movie Navra Maza Navsacha 2. On the other hand, Bachchan recently made his Tamil debut with Rajiniaknth’s Vettaiyan. The film is in cinemas.
