‘I am running, that throw deflects off me…spirit of cricket? Yet again, I’m sorry’: R Ashwin gives his take on Nabi incident in 3rd IND vs AFG T20I

The third T20I between India and Afghanistan has been a roller coaster of emotions for both players and fans. During the super over Rohit Sharma was unhappy with Mohammad Nabi when he stole an extra double after a throw from wicket-keeper Sanju Samson hit him and deflected. The Indian skipper lost his cool and was seen in to have an animated chat with the the Afghan player.

The incident yet again has brought in spirit of cricket into the picture if Nabi was right to steal the extra run. Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin gave his view on the matter. “To get you run out I am running, that throw deflects off me, I am within my right to run. Spirit of cricket? Yet again, I’m sorry,” he said on his YouTube channel.

“A simple explanation for this will suffice. A bowler is bowling just to pick your wicket. If you hit that ball then you can score a run. When the ball hits the pads, it’s a leg bye. When it doesn’t meet your body, and the keeper leaves it, it is a bye,” he added.

“When the ball goes wide off the crease, it is wide. When the bowler outstretches the leg, it is no-ball. All these happen when the bowler is trying to take someone’s wicket and the run comes off the delivery. In the same way, when a fielder throws, why do they do it?” Asked the 37-year-old.

Apart from the incident Rohit’s batting twice in two super overs also sparked a quite a controversy. The Indian captain would accompany Jaiswal to bat in the first super over. However, before the last ball – when India required two to win – the Indian skipper would retire himself out to bring in Rinku Singh at the non-striker’s end. As the match went into another super over, Rohit returned to bat alongside Rinku Singh.

Per the ICC Playing Conditions in case of a tied super over, “Any batsman dismissed in any previous Super Over shall be ineligible to bat in any subsequent Super Over.”

It must be note that the match officials have not yet clarified whether Rohit was retired out or retired hurt. If it was the latter, he would have been eligible to bat again since he was not out in the first Super Over.
