IIT Madras to visit Sri Lanka soon to conduct ‘feasibility study’: Director on new campus
The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM) is in the process of finalising a second abroad campus. As per IITM, the institute will soon conduct a “feasibility study” to set up a campus in Sri Lanka, IIT Madras director V Kamakoti said on Sunday.
According to the institute’s director, the two countries are in talks to set up IIT Madras’s second offshore campus in Sri Lanka. A delegation from Sri Lanka visited the IIT campus, the director said.
“Talks with the Sri Lankan authorities are in very preliminary stages for IIT Madras to set up a campus in that country. A delegation from Sri Lanka visited our campus and soon a delegation from IIT Madras will visit Sri Lanka for a feasibility study,” Kamakoti told The Indian Express.
IIT Madras started its first offshore campus in Tanzania’s Zanzibar with Preeti Aghalyam as the director in November last year. The campus operating from a temporary site currently offers two full-time academic programmes — a two-year Master of Technology in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and a four-year Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.
Apart from IIT Madras, IIT Delhi is also planning to set up a campus in Abu Dhabi where it will start offering degrees 2024 onwards. The institute has plans to offer an M Tech in Energy Transition and Sustainability (ET & S) – at its upcoming Abu Dhabi campus.
