Indhu Rebecca Varghese on Amaran bringing back Major Mukund Varadarajan: ‘He would have been excited to see me next to Kamal Haasan’

Making biopics of brave people who sacrificed their lives for the country isn’t new to Indian cinema. But every time such a story is told, it allows the family members to see the life of their dearest unfold on the grandest screen of them all. However, it also leaves them with the heavy feeling of reliving the grief all over again. Through Amaran, director Rajkumar Periasamy is bringing to life the story of Late Major Mukund Varadarajan, an Ashoka Chakra winner, and his wife, Indhu Rebecca Varghese. Backed by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, Amaran has Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi playing the couple. Indhu graciously joined team Amaran as they kickstarted the promotional drive through a tete-a-tete in front of a live audience.

When asked about her first reaction to Rajkumar’s idea of making Amaran, a film about her husband, Indhu said, “When sir came to talk about the film, the first thing that hit me was how Mukund loves Kamal Haasan sir. He often keeps quoting Anbe Sivam. The first thing I thought was that… he would be excited.”

Delving deeper into how Amaran was a call of the universe, Indhu said, “Mukund passed away in 2014, and for the first couple of years, I was attending a lot of events. Yes, there was pride, but it was also a lot of sadness in reliving the grief all over again. Then, I decided to stop going to these events because I had to be there for my daughter. I couldn’t wallow in my grief. But then, I also had the guilt that I hadn’t talked about Mukund in over eight years.” Indhu went on to talk about an older interview where she was asked if Major Mukund would be remembered by the public. “I knew we would, and the rest is their responsibility. When Rajkumar sir came and spoke to me, I saw it as the universe telling me that I should do something more. This is solely for Mukund. I want to bring him back to life, and relive the moments. Yes, it is hard for all of us. It is bittersweet. It will be happy, sad, and of course… a moment of pride.”

Sai Pallavi, who is playing the role of Indhu Rebecca Varghese in Amaran, interjected with a poignant insight about how the latter referred to Major Mukund in the present tense. “That is beyond selfless love, right?” said the actor, and in response, Indhu simply said, “I just love him. I think that’s just how you love.”
