Indian Idol 15: Vishal Dadlani schools contestant for imitating Atif Aslam: ‘Restaurant main gaate reh jaaoge’
Indian Idol 15 is returning on October 26 with Shreya Ghoshal, Badshah, and Vishal Dadlani as judges. The latest promo of the reality series shows Vishal losing his cool on a contestant who tries to imitate the style of singer Atif Aslam. The judges stop his performance midway and Vishal tells the contestant that if he keeps mimicking the artiste he will end up singing in a restaurant.
In the video, 21-year-old Lakshya Mehta from Amritsar performs “Pehle Nazar Mein,” and while he tries to ape the original singer’s mannerisms, his move leaves Vishal irritated. After stopping his performance midway, Vishal says, “Don’t sing like this. This is Indian Idol. Idols emerge from here. Forget about his inflections, he is a big artiste. The day you copy him, you will only end up singing in hotels and restaurants.”

Lakshya also tried to imitate Arijit Singh when he sang “Tum Kya Mile”. Reacting to that, Vishal Dadlani says, “First you copied Arijit’s inflections, then Atif’s. Don’t sing like that. You’re singing well, but it’s not your original. You perform in public, right? Often in shows, when you imitate other artistes, you win praise from the audience because they want to listen to the songs as they know it. But until you don’t make an identity of your own, you will never become a star. You cannot become an Indian Idol singing in someone else’s style. This is my problem.”
“I really like your voice but I don’t like the imitating situation. To be an artiste, you have to find your own space,” Vishal concluded.
As Indian Idol 15 returns, Badshah joins Shreya Ghoshal and Vishal Dadlani on the show as a judge for the first time. Aditya Narayan will be seen hosting this season. The show will air on Sony TV every Saturday and Sunday at 9 pm.
