International Day of Women and Girls in Science: Why UNESCO celebrates it on Feb 11?
International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2025: As UNESCO mentions, Science in the 21st century is dynamic, collaborative, and diverse, serving as a powerful tool to address global challenges beyond labs. This year marks the 10th International Day of Women and Girls in Science, with a theme of ‘Unpacking STEM careers: Her Voice in Science’.
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated every February 11. The United Nations observes this day to promote full and equal access to and participation of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
On March 14, 2011, during its 55th session, the Commission on the Status of Women approved a report that included agreed conclusions regarding the involvement of women and girls in education, training, and science and technology.
The report also emphasised the need to promote equal opportunities for women in securing full employment and fair working conditions, according to the UN’s International Day of Women and Girls in Science website.
Additionally, on December 20, 2013, the General Assembly passed a resolution on science, technology, and innovation for development, acknowledging that ensuring women and girls of all ages have equal access to and participation in these fields is crucial for advancing gender equality and empowering them.
As per the United Nations, “gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls will make a crucial contribution not only to economic development of the world, but to progress across all the goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well.”
