JEE Main 2024 Result: Students allege error in percentile calculation, NTA dismisses claims
JEE Main 2024 Result: The National Testing Agency (NTA) today declared the results for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2024 at the official website – jeemain.nta.ac.in. However, some students are claiming that there is a difference in their JEE Main marks and percentile predictions.
Aaryan Agarwal, a student from South Delhi, who appeared for the JEE Main 2024 session 1 exam on January 27 claims that he scored 238/300 but got 99.088 percentile at the end. “Students of other exam dates who have a similar score as I have got a higher percentile. Is it my fault that I was assigned the morning shift on January 27? We didn’t choose these shifts. There is a difference of nearly 80 marks, which is not a small thing in JEE. Sadly, NTA is not paying attention to this,” he said.
Another student of January 27 (shift 1) from Lucknow claimed that he scored 163, which got him a 93 percentile whereas he was hoping for a 96 to 98 percentile score. “The difference of 80 marks is huge. I agree that the exam on January 27 was easier than the January 31 exam, but the difference in difficulty level was not as huge as the difference in score and percentile. NTA needs to re-check this issue,” he said.

Another student posted on the X platform (former Twitter) claiming that students of the January 27 exam got 89 percentile after scoring 130-140 marks, but students of the January 31 shift scored 89 percentile after scoring 70-75 marks. A candidate claimed that they got 142 marks and 92 percentile whereas the students of January 31 (shift 2) got 92 percentile after scoring 75-80 marks.
However, NTA has dismissed these allegations and has claimed that the students have been awarded as per their performance, and there is no error in the percentile calculation.
“There were a few instances where students had raised doubts against the answer key and we rectified it wherever necessary, and even informed the students. Other than that, we are standing by our result, and we assure everyone there is no error in it. Not all students perform the same in every shift, and we have given out the scores as per their performances,” a senior NTA official told indianexpress.com.
Percentile scores are scores based on the relative performance of all those who appear for the examination. The marks obtained are transformed into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 for each session of examinees.
The percentile score indicates the percentage of candidates that have scored equal to or below (same or lower raw scores) that particular percentile in that examination. Therefore, the topper (highest score) of each session will get the same percentile of 100 which is desirable. The marks obtained between the highest and lowest scores are also converted to appropriate percentiles.
The formula to calculate the JEE Main 2024 percentile is (100 x number of candidates who appeared in the session with a raw score equal to or less than the candidate) / total number of candidates who appeared in that session.
