The poster features a poignant image of a young girl touching her forehead to a tiger’s, set against a backdrop of a divine light, an iron bridge, and a temple with a flag. According to the makers, Maha Kali will be the first Indian female superhero film, breaking stereotypes and redefining beauty standards in Indian cinema.
The film will be helmed by Puja Aparna, who is known for her work on Martin Luther King. It is reportedly set in West Bengal and is inspired by the story of Goddess Kali. As per the film’s team, Maha Kali will be the “most ferocious superhero in the universe, the true embodiment of Goddess Kali, the destroyer of evil.”
Maha Kali will be produced by Riwaz Ramesh Duggal of RKD Studios, with Prasanth Varma as screenwriter. While the film has been announced, its cast is still under the wraps. Smaran Sai, of RX 100 fame, will compose the music, while Sri Nagendra Tangala will serve as the production designer.
This announcement comes on the heels of Varma’s massive success with HanuMan, a Telugu pan-India superhero film that dominated the box office earlier this year. The movie wowed audiences with its mythological scenes, fight sequences and screenplay, while its CGI exceeded budget expectations, resulting in a successful box office run of Rs 265 crore worldwide, comprising Rs 210 crore in India and Rs 55 crore overseas.
Besides Maha Kali, Prasanth Varma has multiple projects in the works, including Jai Hanuman, a sequel to HanuMan, and Simba, starring Nandamuri Mokshagna, son of veteran Telugu actor Nandamuri Balakrishna.
