Today in Politics: Justice Sanjiv Khanna to be sworn-in as CJI; Amit Shah in Jharkhand on last day of campaign for phase 1 polls

Monday will mark the end of campaigning for the 43 Assembly seats of Jharkhand going to the polls in the first phase on November 13.

On the last day of campaigning, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will address three rallies in the poll-bound state. Shah will first address a rally in the Saraikela constituency, seen to be the stronghold of former Chief Minister Champai Soren, who joined the BJP from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) recently and will be the BJP’s candidate from the seat.

Shah will then proceed to Simdega Assembly constituency where he will address a public gathering before finishing the day’s campaign in the Tamar Assembly seat with a meeting in support of JD(U) candidate Gopal Krishna Patar.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who has been part of several landmark Supreme Court judgements such as scrapping the electoral bonds scheme and upholding abrogation of Article 370, will be sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India on Monday.

President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office at Rashtrapati Bhavan in a ceremony scheduled at 10 am. Justice Khanna will succeed Justice DY Chandrachud, who retired on Sunday, and his term will last until May 13, 2025.

The Centre officially notified Justice Khanna’s appointment on October 24 following Chief Justice Chandrachud’s recommendation on October 16. Friday was the last working day of Justice Chandrachud as the CJI and he was given a rousing farewell by judges, lawyers and staff of the apex court and the high courts.

As part of its preparations for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will hold a series of district workers’ conferences from Monday to November 20 to consolidate grassroots support across the national capital, the party said last week.

Addressing a press conference last week, AAP’s Delhi unit convenor Gopal Rai said that to energise party workers and reaffirm its commitment to the people of Delhi, the party will hold district-level conferences.”These conventions will be an essential step in our efforts for the upcoming assembly elections. They will enable our volunteers to unify behind a shared vision for a better future under AAP’s governance,” Rai said.

AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, along with senior party leaders, will address these conventions, which will mobilise booth-, mandal, and district-level officer bearers and workers from 14 key districts, he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the 200th anniversary celebrations of the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir at Vadtal in Gujarat Kheda district on Monday, through video conferencing.

He will also address the gathering on the occasion.

The temple in Vadtal, also known as Vadtal Swaminarayan, having a lotus-shaped plinth is a rare architectural specimen. The nine domes on the temple adore the elevation of the temple. The temple was ordered by Swaminarayan and constructed under the guidance of Sadguru Shree Brahmanand Swami.
