Today in Politics: Parliament winter session begins, no clarity yet on CM question in Maharashtra

Just as the Maharashtra results wind up, we have another important start in the political calendar Monday with the winter session of Parliament.

Leaders of the Government and the Opposition met Sunday to deliberate on the session and there appeared to be a perceptible change in mood in the two camps as compared to the last session.

The BJP, which appeared dispirited after under-performing in the Lok Sabha elections, is in a triumphant mood after spearheading the landslide for the ruling Mahayuti in Maharashtra while the Opposition, despite the reversals, is hoping to regroup.

While the BJP is upbeat, those in the Congress ranks were not due to the setback in Maharashtra.

But sources in the Congress said the Opposition will seek discussions on the indictment of industrialist Gautam Adani saga and the Manipur unrest, issues it feels are the Government’s Achilles heel.

What Bills, discussions are on the cards: The government seems determined to push through the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which is under the consideration of a Joint Committee of Parliament. While Jagdambika Pal, chairman of the joint committee, has said that the panel’s report is ready, its Opposition members are seeking more time and plan to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Monday to seek extension of the committee’s tenure.

The Congress also sought a discussion on the issue of rising pollution in north India and train accidents.

Back to Maharashtra. Mahyuti has stormed back to power but there is that big CM question.

A senior state BJP leader said the party wants to ensure “a hurdle-free government formation process including the appointment of the CM” along with its partners Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde and the NCP under Ajit Pawar.

Maharashtra BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule said, “A decision on the CM will be taken by party Central leaders and the BJP parliamentary board. There will be adequate consultation with alliance partners.”

Partner Shiv Sena does not seem to have given up its hope of the Mahayuti retaining Shinde as the CM.

Hoping Shinde continues as CM, a leader from his camp said, “Mahayuti fought the Assembly election under the leadership of Eknath Shinde and achieved a historic mandate. So, the alliance should decide to continue with him as Chief Minister.”

Several rounds of meetings are said to have taken place Sunday night, but there is no clarity on the matter so far But with the BJP getting 132 of its 230-seat tally in the Maharashtra House of 288, Fadnavis looks like he has the upper hand.

Another important meeting is happening in West Bengal that has major implications for the political dynamics nationally.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) will hold its national executive committee meeting on Monday — and the focus is on national politics.

Having consolidated its position further in the bypolls after winning 29 out of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the parliamentary elections held earlier this year, the TMC leaders feel the time has come for the party to play a more “vociferous” role in Parliament during the winter session as well as go for the organisational reshuffle, planned by party number two Abhishek Banerjee.

So, expect for fireworks from the Banerjees as well.
