Vettaiyan box office collection Day 4: Rajinikanth-Amitabh Bachchan starrer is second highest grossing Tamil film this year after Vijay’s Greatest of All Time; opens at third at the global box-office
Vettaiyan box office collection Day 4: Within four days of its release, Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan has firmly captured the second place in the list of top grossing Tamil films of 2024. While the pole position is held by Vijay’s Greatest of All Time, Vettaiyan is having a decent four-day run thanks to the extended holiday season of Dussehra. On the first Sunday of its release, Vettaiyan — also starring Amitabh Bachchan — made almost Rs 23 crore to enter the Rs 100 crore club domestically. While the opening day number of Rs 31.7 crore hasn’t been replicated over the next three days, the collections managed to hover around the Rs 25 crore mark as it made Rs 24 crore on Day 2 and Rs 26.75 crore on Day 3. The domestic collections are now at Rs 104.8 crore according to trade website Sacnilk.

Usually, Rajinikanth films are known for making a huge impact on the global box office, and it is his previous outings that hold records in multiple countries. However, Vettaiyan didn’t make similar inroads into the market, and many netizens are blaming the poor release plans of the distributors. Nevertheless, the numbers being thrown around as the worldwide collection range from Rs 175 crore to Rs 212 crore. It is interesting how Lyca Productions, the makers of TJ Gnanavel’s Vettaiyan, hasn’t officially put out any numbers, right from Day 1. However, as per reports, the film opened on fourth spot in North America. They are just publicising the public reviews to Vettaiyan, and are hoping the goodwill brings people to the theatres, like the old times. It is also reported that the film opened at 3rd place in North America just below The Wild Robot, and Joker: Folie a DEux
Vettaiyan, which has received a decent 57.25 percent occupancy in Tamil Nadu for its Tamil version, has been doing decent business in the neighbouring states of Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. The Telugu version of Vettaiyan has been holding strong, and contributing a decent share to the overall collections of the film. However, a rather slow start has proved to be a dampener for the film in the Telugu states.

But what could really prove to be the biggest dampener for Vettaiyan’s box office prospects is the weather in Tamil Nadu. With places like Madurai, Coimbatore and Salem already inundated, and Chennai expected to follow suit over the next 3-4 days, the collections will undoubtedly take a hit. Things have not quite fallen in place for Vettaiyan as the reviews coming from many quarters have been mixed too. While the content-heavy film, which is a marked departure from the usual Rajinikanth brand of cinema, has delivered decent box-office returns, the numbers associated with Vettaiyan aren’t what is expected from the Superstar, especially after his recent blockbuster success, Jailer.
With music by Anirudh Ravichander, Vettaiyan, which also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Manju Warrier, Kishore, Ritika Singh, Rana Daggubati, and Fahadh Faasil, is set to face the real litmus test on Monday. If there isn’t really that big a drop, it would be safe to say that the film would muscle its way to the end, but still end up in second position after GOAT in the overall list of highest grossers in Tamil cinema 2024.
