Vettaiyan box office collection day 5: Rajinikanth’s latest action drama, Vettaiyan, saw a big fall in collections on its first Monday, netting an alarmingly low figure. The film, also starring Amitabh Bachchan, recorded Rs 5.35 cr nett, slipping to single digit collections within five days of its release.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Vettaiyan’s Monday collections were over 75 percent lower than its Sunday figures, which stood at Rs 22.3 cr. The film’s opening weekend, despite mixed reviews, was decent, thanks to the star power of Rajinikanth in Tamil Nadu. The film has so far netted Rs 110 cr all-India nett.

In terms of global revenue, Vettaiyan’s first weekend collections stood at Rs 189 cr. With Monday collections, the film would be close to hitting the Rs 200 cr mark worldwide. It currently stands as the second highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024, after Vijay’s The Greatest of All Time, which ended its global run at Rs 451 cr. Vettaiyan is in the top 25 highest Tamil grossers of all-time list, and should be now aiming to cross the global gross of Vijay’s Master, which stood at Rs 223 cr.

Vettaiyan’s box office trajectory isn’t like that of Rajinikanth’s previous blockbuster, Jailer. The Nelson directorial had opened at Rs 48 cr all-India and ended its domestic run at a whopping Rs 350 cr. But Vettaiyan can now hope to maintain its pace and earn steadily at the box office with virtually no competition in sight.

The film won’t be competing with Jailer, and as of now, won’t even cross the all-India nett of GOPAT, which was at Rs 250 cr. The film is directed by TJ Gnanavel, who had previously helmed the acclaimed Jai Bhim.
